hot pot bbq

This BBQ from black + blum is genius! It looks like a terracotta pot, but upon closer inspection you realize the top comes off to reveal a grill. Isn't this the perfect solution for a small outdoor space?

coolest band poster, ever.

How amazing are these three-dimensional paper horse posters? Artist Xavier Barrade and FOAM agency created them to promote the band Dry the River.

happy bastille day and cocktail hour

So, it's Bastille Day, and what better way to celebrate the French holiday than with my new favorite cocktail: the French 75?

The French 75, or "Soixante Quinze" in French, is made from Gin, Champagne, lemon juice and sugar. According to Wikipedia, the drink was created in 1915 at the Paris landmark, Harry's New York Bar by barman Harry MacElhone. The concoction was said to pack such a punch that it felt like being bombarded by the French 75mm howitzer artillery piece—but I just think it's delightful!

The recipe I followed can be found over at the lovely site, Honest Fare. Santé!

i like your freckles

When I was young, an old man working at a food stand told me "I used to have freckles like you, but they went away." I remember thinking, so there is hope, they will go away! Well, they never did ...

When I was 19, I had a very sweet boyfriend from Ecuador  who would tell me that he likes my "spreckles." In college, the Russian man who owned the liquor store a block away from my apartment would always say (in a very thick Russian accent), "hey freckles, I like your freckles. You come visit me again soon." I love quoting him with my fake Russian accent: "hey freckles ... you come see me again soon." I started to think, maybe freckles aren't so bad ... as much as I used to hate them, I kind of love them now. The best part about freckles? They hide blemishes!

going public

A few days ago I saw the cutest bike chained up in front of our apartment. I figured it was some fancy schmancy European bike with an equally fancy price tag ... Oh well. That's life, right?

BUT, how excited was I today when I opened my Refinery29 Reserve newsletter to find the exact bike I'd been drooling over just days before? Super excited! As it turns out, the mysterious bike was a PUBLIC bike, which is headquartered right here in San Francisco, just blocks from my house!

As for the fancy price tag, PUBLIC bikes are actually quite reasonably priced. My two favorites, the C3 and C7 are priced from $550 to $650 and right now Reserve has a great deal on the bikes—spending $100 gets you $200 on any PUBLIC Bike. Also, while browsing their site I came across another great deal (valid till July 15th): purchase any bike and get a free Front Rack, Folding Crate & Bell ($100 value). All you have to do is add the items to your order, enter code PUBLICGOODIES at check out, and they will remove the $100 on their end and send you an updated receipt. Just look at all these deals, the bike is practically free! I want one.

box it up

I can't say that I remember the last time I went on a proper picnic, but I do know that next time I want to bring along Boxsal's fashionable picnic in a box!

Boxsal, based in Dallas, Texas, makes these super-cool, eco-friendly picnic boxes. Each box is made of post-consumer pulp and packed with compostable utensils, plates, cups and napkins.

You can use the box again and again, as a picnic box or for storage, and once you've beat the heck out of it, you can recycle it! According to their site, each Boxsal comfortably accommodates a bottle of wine and nibbles.

So, pack up that box and get picnicking!
